After surgery you may have red, sore eyes and blurry vision. This is usually done under local anaesthetic and you normally don’t need to stay in hospital overnight. If you have a detached retina you may need surgery to reattach the retina. Vitrectomy, in which the vitreous gel is removed and replaced with a gas bubble or oil bubble to hold the retina in place. It can cause permanent vision loss if the retina isn’t reattached. If your local hospital does not have an eye casualty department you should go to A&E, but it is better if you go to eye casualty if you can. Retinal detachment surgery options include: Scleral buckle, in which a flexible band is placed around the eye to counteract the force pulling the retina out of place. A retinal detachment is a medical emergency where part of the retina pulls away from the blood vessels that supply it oxygen. If you notice this you should go to your local eye casualty as soon as possible. Some people describe it as being like a veil or curtain. Retinal detachment causes a shadow coming across your vision. Your retina can become detached following a blow to your eye, for example from punch or a ball. If you cannot contact your optometrist, or if you notice a shadow spreading across the vision of one of your eyes you should get urgent attention, ideally from an eye casualty department at the hospital. a change in floaters or flashing lights after you have had a direct blow to your eye.a sudden increase in floaters, particularly if you also notice flashing lights. You should contact your optometrist straight away if you notice: Before the retina detaches you may see flashes and/or floaters. Retinal detachment (when the retina gets pulled away from the back of the eye) When to get help right away Sometimes new floaters can be a sign of a retinal tear or retinal detachment when the retina gets torn or pulled from its normal position at the back of the eye. Retinal detachment is when your retina, the thin layer at the back of your eye, peels away from the back of your eye. Sometimes the retina can detach or lift from its position, becoming separated from its blood supply that provides it with essential nutrients and oxygen this. ![]() Simple Winter Watercolor Art TutorialĬreate your own beautiful winter scenes, and don’t worry – this super simple watercolor tutorial is great for beginner and aspiring artists. Lakeside Bank "Write On!" Creative Writing Challenge ![]() (He remained in Japan until 1995, when he resettled in New York.) When lit, the material did not detonate but rather sizzled, leaving “an interesting surface typography”, Rivenc says. ![]() The Getty also took samples from transitional paintings in which Cai mixed gunpowder and realgar, an arsenic sulfide, into oil and acrylic paint, a process he started in China and continued when he moved to Japan in 1986. Limited mostly to whites and earth tones, they posed “no special conservation challenge”, Rivenc reports. The artist allowed the Getty scientists to take microscopic samples from some of the early figurative oils and gouaches executed in China in the early 1980s, often with paints he made on his own, and to chemically analyse the pigments. “In turn, those interview questions helped me to reflect on myself.” “Sometimes these dialogues were quite personal,” Cai says. ![]() For example, gunpowder, thought to have been invented in China in the ninth century, offered Cai a philosophical “opportunity for liberation” from “a timid and cautious personality”, she says, as well as a way to invoke the material’s association with traditional Chinese medicine. To that end, researchers have conducted probing interviews with the artist and recorded oral histories, with Rivenc crisscrossing the globe–even travelling to Cai’s birthplace of Quanzhou in China to gain insights from the artist’s early mentors. As onlookers watch tremulously, a blast ensues, and once assistants have stamped out embers and the smoke has cleared, the singed residue of the “drawing” is visible.Ĭai Guo-Qiang's Sunshine and Solitude (2010), installed at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City Photo: Diego Berruecos courtesy of MUACīeyond delving into processes like this one, the Getty was interested in exploring how Cai’s thinking, rooted in Taoism, alchemy, feng shui, astrophysics and cultural history, relates to his materials, and how he envisions his works lasting in years to come. Then he sprinkles gunpowder carefully around the lines, covers the ensemble with sheets of cardboard weighed down with bricks or rocks to control the force of the explosion, and lights the fuse. Sometimes he adds foliage or garments like abayas (for Memories (2011), presented in Doha, Qatar) to the mix. The artist sketches on high-quality Japanese paper placed on the floor, often also laying down stencils he has cut out from cardboard. Since then the institute has burrowed into the artist’s oeuvre and discovered that his works are surprisingly durable.Ĭai, an energetic international traveller who is based in New York, is perhaps best known for his gunpowder drawings. “We wanted to include more contemporary artists and a more diverse range and radical use of materials,” says Rivenc, who is leading the Cai study. So far every book has centred on a US or European artist who is no longer living: Willem de Kooning, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Lucio Fontana and Hans Hofmann. The goal was to produce a book about Cai for The Artist’s Materials series issued by Getty Publications. But the organisation had a counterproposal, she says: to investigate the full range of the artist’s oeuvre, including his early, more tentative oils, transitional works, black gunpowder drawings and visceral museum installations as well as the coloured gunpowder paintings. “We thought, ‘That’s great,’” says Rachel Rivenc, an associate scientist at the institute. To find out, the Chinese-born artist contacted the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles in early 2016, asking its staff to take a look at the works that he had started making by detonating daytime fireworks on canvas the previous year. But recently Cai became curious about another uncertainty: how his coloured gunpowder paintings will hold up over time. ![]() Crucial to his process is the element of surprise: a level of uncertainty and suspense about exactly what effect his detonations will have on his works on paper, for example, or how smoke will billow in ephemeral events like his project to extend the Great Wall of China with two fuse lines. The restlessly inventive artist Cai Guo-Qiang is known for his radical experimentation with materials-especially gunpowder, which he has used to ignite his drawings and to stage explosive events outdoors for awestruck viewers around the world. ![]() First came Fake Pietro: In WandaVision, Wanda’s murdered brother Pietro (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Avengers: Age of Ultron) shows up on her doorstep, but he’s played by Evan Peters, who portrayed Pietro in Fox’s X-Men movies. In the meantime, Marvel Studios is having a little fun with its audience. Disney bought Fox and thus acquired the rights to use the mutants (not to mention the Fantastic Four) in future MCU films. But the X-Men are definitely on their way to the MCU. That didn’t happen-Disney has not yet even announced who they’ll hire to replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in future films. Many fans are also hoping for a throwback show that chronicles the adventures of the first Black Captain America, Isaiah Bradley. In the comics, Elijah Bradley become the superhero Patriot, modeling his costume after those of Captain America and Bucky, and a founding member of the Young Avengers team. Teen hero America Chavez will be a character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Kate Bishop, Hawkeye’s protege, is set to star in Hawkeye. Ironheart, are each getting their own TV show on Disney+. We’ve already met Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie Lang who aspires to be a superhero herself. And while Wanda’s children were revealed to be mere creations of her subconscious in WandaVision, the finale of that show hinted that Wanda was figuring out a way to bring Billy, Tommy and Vision to life once again. In the comics, Wanda and Vision’s children, Billy and Tommy, become part of that Young Avengers team. Marvel has been long hinting at a future Young Avengers team. It’s possible that a villainous Thunderbolts super-group could be in the works. In the comics, the Raft has acted as both a prison and the home base for a super-villains group that Zemo creates called the Thunderbolts. Loki, who killed what was probably thousands of innocent people when he attacked New York City in Avengers, is now getting his own TV show.Īt the end of episode 5, the Dora Milaje capture Zemo and tell Bucky they are taking him to The Raft, a prison in the middle of the sea where Bucky, Sam and Cap’s other allies were once held during Captain America: Civil War. This is not the first time that Marvel would have transformed one of its most popular and eccentric villains into an anti-hero. Zemo has a sympathetic backstory-the Avengers accidentally murdered his family-and plenty of charm. Even Thanos has a point about the environment, though he could have used the Infinity Stones to double the resources in the universe rather than cutting the number of living beings in half. In Black Panther, Killmonger is right about Wakanda’s imperative to help those impacted by a long history of colonialism and racism-it’s his violent means to that end that are the problem. ![]() But Marvel has a way of swaying our sympathies toward villains who speak truth to power. And it’s not totally clear how Marvel might help Zemo win the audience over again. ![]() Yes, Zemo murdered Black Panther’s father, T’Chaka. We controlled both our Lorex and Night Owl cameras through their mobile apps, but Lorex gave us more capabilities, from speaking through two-way audio to creating more smart home integrations. However, installing the hub was as easy as plugging it in, so we wouldn’t let it sway you from using Lorex. The Lorex Wireless 2K Camera comes with a hub, while the Night Owl does not (although you can’t forget about that bulky 1 TB hard drive). So, while both cameras are motion-activated, their motion detection differs a lot. With Night Owl, we got a ton of unnecessary notifications, but Lorex only let us know when it detected people. Let’s be honest: Our phone bugs us enough times a day without notifying us every time the wind blows. Person DetectionĪnother win for Lorex is the fact that it has artificial intelligence, meaning it can differentiate people from other moving objects. Learn how to set up a VPN on the FireStick. TIP: If you’re not on your home network and you want to use your Fire TV Stick, use a VPN for the Fire TV Stick. Bottom line: If you want more local storage, go with Night Owl. However, the Lorex 2K is compatible with micro-SD cards of up to 256 GB, making the Night Owl storage only four times as large. We did the math, and that’s 32 times more storage with the Night Owl camera. The Night Owl Wired Bullet Camera came with a 1 TB hard drive, while the Lorex 2K came with a 32 GB micro-SD card. Although both camera packages included local storage, they came in different sizes and forms. With any security cameras, you want video recording onto both cloud and local storage, ideally. These conversations couldn’t happen with the Night Owl - a definite drawback. The 2K camera has speakers and microphones, which meant that we could speak to people through the camera and our mobile app. The wider the field of view, the more we can see out of a single camera. Lorex also has higher-quality video in terms of the field of view - 140 degrees to Night Owl’s 120 (180 degrees being the maximum). More pixels mean a clearer image, which could come in handy during a criminal investigation. While the Night Owl Wired Bullet Camera has 1080p HD video resolution, the current standard for the industry, the Lorex camera takes it a step further with 2K resolution. Just because you can buy Lorex and Night Owl in the same stores doesn’t mean they’re equal it’s quite the opposite, actually. Lorex was definitely easier, being wireless all we had to do was place the camera outside and plug it in inside our home, whereas there were more cables involved with the Night Owl Wired Bullet Camera, which includes a bulky hard drive. We installed both cameras ourselves, a process known as do-it-yourself or DIY home security installation. We paid no monthly fees for our home security, making it very affordable. Neither Lorex nor Night Owl offers 24/7 professional monitoring for any of their cameras, so if you want self-monitored home security, either camera will work. As we’ll detail below, Lorex is a better camera for smart homes in general, with four more integrations than Night Owl. OK Google, ask Night Owl Connect about the backyard camera.Īlthough both cameras work with Google Assistant, Lorex has more capabilities, like turning the camera on and off.OK Google, ask Night Owl Connect to start.Hey Google, is the living room camera on?.If you use a Google Home security system, either camera will integrate nicely. Google Assistant Integrationsīoth cameras work with Google Assistant, so we commanded them using our voices alone. Of course, you can always upload the local storage onto a cloud server, but you’ll need to do that manually on your own time. Neither camera offers cloud storage rather, they both come with local storage devices, which we’ll detail in a bit. Cameras with infrared night vision are our favorite, because we like seeing our front steps without anyone knowing we’re watching, given we’ve hidden our outdoor cameras. Infrared and Color Night Visionīoth cameras work at night and can show you images in black and white or in color. 1 This is the standard we look for when we install security cameras outside and should work for most climates. What does that mean? Well, the 6 indicates that the cameras are completely dust-tight and impervious to solids, while the 5 means that they can handle water jets projected by nozzles of 6.3 mm and below. ![]() Outdoor Durabilityīoth are outdoor cameras with IP ratings of 65. There’s a bit of overlap between the two cameras, “bit” being the keyword here. |
